Man Or Supergirl?

Supergirl Meets Ambush Bug

The Daring New Adventures Of Supergirl #16 featured the Maid of Might squaring off against everyone’s favorite Meta avenger: Ambush Bug.

The twist to this story was that AB thought Supergirl was literally Superman in drag. After several pages of your standard Bronze Age DC super-shenanigans, Kara sets him straight.

I always wondered if the Bug’s confusion was writer Paul Kupperberg’s way of taking a jab at DC’s Powers That Be, since the head honchos of that time considered Supergirl to be little more than a clone of her iconic cousin.

Guess the world will never know. Got to love Carmine Infantino and Bob Oksner’s gorgeous Supergirl though …

  1. I think it's definitly a dig yes, it's hard to read too much into it as the politics behind DCs attitude to Supergirl at the time are quite vague but it's interesting looking back to that time as DC were just starting to realise teen heroes were the 'in' thing and we were getting the Titans, Outsiders, Firestorm and even a teen JLA eventually. Supergirl should have been a natural fit into that new niche but while she was still appearing here and there I never got the impression DC had any faith in her as a character – perhaps they considered her too powerful? Robin had broken free from Batmans shadow by joining the Titans, so had Wonder Girl and so on, but was there really this implicit perception Supergirl was forever in Supermans shadow and if so why?I also wonder if the very independent treatment of Power Girl over on Earth-2 affected DCs perception as she was very deliberatly the exact opposite of Supergirl in terms of her character.
